Race Riot resolution OK'd
By BRIAN BARBER World Staff Writer
10/5/2007
The resolution seeks to designate a Race Riot memorial with the National
Park Service.
The City Council on Thursday unanimously approved a resolution in
support of an effort to get the planned John Hope Franklin Greenwood
Reconciliation Memorial and Museum designated with the National Park
Service.
The site would commemorate the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot, which destroyed the
Greenwood district, killed at least 38 people and left thousands homeless.
"We need to put this in historical perspective," said Councilor John
Eagleton, one of the councilors who brought the resolution for
consideration.
"A society that does not study history is condemned to repeat it," he
said. "I don't want that to happen to Tulsa."
Councilor Rick Westcott said that as he grew up in the city, the riot
was never discussed as it should have been.
"I think this will be a starting point for reconciliation and healing,"
he said.
Councilor Roscoe Turner said: "This won't wipe the slate clean, but it
will be the first step toward closure."
In 2002, as a result of the Race Riot Commission Act, the state
Legislature provided as much as $5 million for the project. The local
race riot committee to date has received $3.7 million from the state.
The memorial and the museum would be south of Interstate 244 between
Elgin and Detroit avenues. Site work has been paid for, and the
committee is getting ready to take bids to complete the project.

Greetings from CURE:
Caucasians United for Reparations and Emancipation (CURE) has been
approached by the organizers of the upcoming 20th Anniversary Gathering
of the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (N'COBRA)
with a request that we organize an event in parallel with the one they
are planning for Saturday, October 27th in Washington DC.
We are being invited to urge that White Reparationists attend a rally in
celebration of this anniversary of the founding of N'COBRA to be held on
Friday night from 6 to 11 p.m., October 26th, at the Plymouth
Congregational Church, 5301 North Capitol NE. This rally will be used
to honor many of those who have worked so diligently over the years to
bring this discussion to national attention.
The next morning, while Black Reparationists work among themselves to
plan for the future, we are being asked to provide a space where the
White Reparationists in attendance can confer on strategies and skills
for our work of becoming ever more effective advocates within our own
white communities in support of the Black led movement for Reparations.
While details for this event are still in development, we are close to
securing a venue for such an event on Saturday, October 27th. I write
to you today to ask:
(1) that you HOLD THOSE DATES, and plan now to participate in these
important events in Washington DC; and
(2) that you please help us spread the word of this upcoming event to
celebrate this important milestone and to meet and work with other white
reparationists in support of this cause critical to bringing justice to
this country.
Further details will be made available as they come together, using this
email list.
Please write if you have any questions or if you can help us organize
and prepare for these events.

invited

Dear CURE Members, Friends and Allies,
N'COBRA is celebrating its 20th anniversary this weekend with some
exciting special events. We urge white supporters to show their
recognition and appreciation of the work of N'COBRA either by being
there in person or by sending a donation.
Larry Yates is representing CURE at all of the events, and will be
speaking on behalf of us at the rally on Friday night. His statement
will be circulated to the list.
The 20th anniversary events are as follows:
Friday morning October 26th from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. there will be a
Wachovia Bank Demonstration and Protest at 1901 7th st. NW, Washington
DC. Wachovia's predecessor (The Bank of North America) financed the
American Revolution using Black people as chattel property. Wachovia
reaped huge profits from its slave-dealing predecessors, yet it refuses
to dialogue about reparations for the African American community.
Friday evening N'COBRA and all will celebrate at a 20th Anniversary
Rally from 6 to 11 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church, 5301 North
Capitol NE, Washington, DC. Leaders, activists and scholars will be in
attendance. There will also be a panel discussion moderated by WPFW-FM
talk show host Rev. Ambrose I. Lane Sr.
Saturday evening October 27 from 7 to 11 p.m. there will be a 20th
Anniversary Party and Fundraiser at Pier 7 Restaurant, 650 Water Street
SW, Washington, DC. The event features a buffet dinner and a concert
with Proverbs Reggae Band and Terrelle and Co. comedy act. If you would
like to attend the Saturday night meal and concert, please send an email
to wautella at aol.com informing him that you will be there. The cost for
this event is $60. N'COBRA must know of your plan to attend by tomorrow
night so that the appropriate amount of food can be ordered.
CURE members and white supporters of reparations are encouraged to make
a $20 donation to N'COBRA in honor of the 20 years of service. The
donation can be sent to N'COBRA, P.O. Box 90604, Washington, DC 20090.
Thank you for the support and appreciation that you show to this vital
coalition of reparations organizations, N'COBRA.
Sincerely,
Ida Hakim
