Subject: [cure-news] CURE represented at N'COBRA anniversary celebration
Message-ID: <4724F742.4090006 at reparationsthecure.org>
Dear Members, Allies and Friends,
N'COBRA celebrated its 20th anniversary this weekend, and we're happy to
say that CURE was represented at all of the events. Larry Yates, member
of CURE's Executive Committee and long-time social justice activist,
represented us at the Friday night rally and spoke on behalf of our
organization.
We appreciate the dedication of Larry Yates very much. Below is his
statement to those assembled at the rally: it is a great statement indeed.
Sincerely,
Ida
Good evening. I am here on behalf of CURE -- Caucasians United for
Reparations and Emancipation. I bring greetings from our Chairperson,
Ida Hakim, and our members around the nation -- not a large band, but a
committed one.
I can best begin by quoting from our Statement of Belief
"We dedicate our time, energy, talent and resources to support and
advocate, without reservation, the movement for full and complete
reparations to the descendants of enslaved Africans in the U.S. and
throughout the Diaspora.
We support and advocate reparations proposals put forward by Black
leaders, recognizing that white Americans have no part in deciding what
is required to repair and restore the descendants of enslaved Africans
individually and collectively, and that these decisions belong to Black
people alone."
CURE, on the Internet, and by publishing a book written by our members,
has established that support for reparations does exist on the spectrum
of white opinion. We have also sought to provide support for efforts
like this one in whatever ways our capacities allow.
I like to think that in a small way we are subverting the united front
of whiteness. Those who hear about us can't help but wonder if that
gentle-looking white haired woman in the grocery store, or that nice
computer programmer, or maybe that guy getting out of his pickup truck
out who looks like Santa, are among the white supporters of reparations.
And we are. And we recruit.
We are not in the front lines, as you are. We are not the ones who must
develop the strategies and the demands. But we are seeking to meet our
responsibilities, in a land where all of us have "come over a way that
with tears has been watered," where all of us, whether we choose to face
it or not, are a nation whose path has been "through the blood of the
slaughtered."
Thank you for what you are doing, and for the opportunity to share our
support and commitment with you.
